Year-End Fundraising: Your Survival Guide

You’re in the final stretch of the fiscal year, and the pressure is on! How will you and your team make it through till June 30th?  Here are our nine tips to help your team not only survive but come out with a win.  1. Keep Your Energy Up! Let's be honest: year-end fundraising is a marathon, not a sprint. But that doesn't mean you can't have fun along the way!  If you can manage to keep the energy high and the smiles genuine, you’ll be a lot better off.  We believe in radiating positivity and determination. It's infectious, and it motivates everyone to keep at it. “Keep it happy, keep it snappy,” as my grandmother used to say. 2. Stronger Together. Remember, you're a team. You all are at your best when you support each other.  Lift each other up, share ideas, and celebrate our successes together.  You and your team all bring unique strengths to the table, and by working together, you can achieve amazing things. AND you can blow past that year-end fundraising goal.  3. Keep It Light, Stay Focused. Yes, fundraising can be stressful, but pleeeeze don’t forget to laugh.  A little humor can go a long way in keeping spirits high. And remember, let's stay focused on the wonderful work you are doing in the world, the impact you're making, the lives you're changing.  You're doing important work, and that's something to be so very proud of.  We are honored to support you! 4. It Takes a True Team. If you’re the manager, then you should be right in there with your team, making calls, crafting emails, and doing whatever it takes to reach your goal. Nothing sticks in colleagues' minds more than the genuine sentiment that you're all truly in this together. You’re not just a manager here – you’re also part of the team. This isn't just about hitting numbers; it's about making a real difference in the lives of those we serve. 5. How to Stay Organized. Keep things smooth by breaking down those goals into manageable steps. Have you considered daily check-ins to track progress, share updates, and brainstorm solutions - especially during crunch time? No surprises, just clear communication and collaboration. And remember, your timeline might not be your donor’s timeline so make sure to listen to your fundraisers…they might know best.   6. Don't Forget to Celebrate! Celebration is sooooo important in our work. Too often, we get a huge win, but then we run off to the next thing.  But remember, every single little victory counts! Try to acknowledge each milestone your team reaches, whether it's a major donation or simply exceeding your daily call goal.  AND, really do consider hosting a year-end bash in early July. Even something low-key, like a celebratory picnic or happy hour, will be appreciated. Everyone will deserve it at that point!  7. Take Good Care of Each Other. This is crunch time, and that means that self-care is more important than ever.  Do some of your team members need a flexible schedule or some remote workdays?  Don’t just be receptive to your team’s requests; actively ask what they need to be successful and healthy. Remember to model this behavior yourself—actions speak louder than words! What about some healthy snacks in the break room? How about even ordering lunch one day? It's important to recharge so your team can keep going strong. 8. Small Rewards, Big Impact. Yes, you have our fundraising goals, but you also want to acknowledge the incredible work you're doing.  Why not have some fun incentives along the way – maybe a gift card for the top performer or a team outing when you hit our target?  Even a simple "thank you" for your hard work can mean the world. 9. Absolutely Ask Your Board Members for Last-minute Help. A call or email from your board member could be the nudge a lapsed donor may need to renew their commitment. And remember, a “renew your gift” ask is the easiest one to make.  You know your board member’s time is valuable, but their donor calls are very powerful.  They may personally connect with a few key supporters and simply remind them of the impact their past generosity has made. It might just be the thing you need to finish the year above goal. Bottom Line The final sprint to year-end fundraising doesn't have to be a drag!  It's a chance to boost morale and foster a supportive team environment.  By leading with energy, prioritizing clear communication, recognizing hard work, and offering flexibility and incentives, you can empower your team to not only reach but exceed your goals.
